Weekly Reflection 5

Engagement remains low across all year groups, with the same pupils submitting work. I do send reminders to the whole class group leading up to a submission in order to give them a chance to engage. However, I feel the lack of physically being in school and in a classroom is really effecting the levels of engagement. Some pupils are also very unsure and are in constant contact, even late into the evening. I have made sure to inform the pupils that try to keep their contact in school hours if they wish for an immediate response, and to treat this process as if we are still in school. I have introduced the second and fourth years to their photography project this Thursday to allow time for questions and queries before leaving them off for the Easter break, however their was none, and thus I hope there will be a good level of submissions. The art department had an online meeting to discuss how to move forward as it appears we will not be returning to schools after the break. We agreed on some design activities for the first, second, and fourth years. In order to help them focus and consider others during this time we will run a competition to make greeting cards to send to hospitals and hospices, similar to what An Post did with their free mailing cards. This will allow the communities to connect and help pupils realise that they too are not the only ones alone, and perhaps they even have relatives that they cannot visit and wish to send them some love through the post. I agreed that once we have chosen a few cards I will print them and post them out to the facilities chosen. I am hoping this will be a fun project for those year groups. For my third years I have asked them to gather all primary sources they can for their craft and begin to research materials and sketch out any ideas. I have a feeling that the junior cert will not go ahead but this is certainly no reason to stop the pupils from moving forward with their projects where they can. Keeping them focused and driven is very import during this trying time.

3D Mixed Media Sculpture & Preparatory Work 28.02.19

28/02/19 Workshop 6 3D Mixed Media Sculpture  & Preparatory Work At the start of the 3D mixed media sculpture I struggled with the entail concept when a bag of miscellaneous objects where placed in front of me to sketch. I began exploring a few of the object such as a computer hard drive, a wooden shoe, a trumpet and various piece of metal.   As I was struggling to conceptualise my design I turned to card and start to experiment with shape. In my under graduate model making was required with every design, thus card and cardboard are very familiar materials to me. I began by exploring various shapes and how they might interact with each other.  As I was trying to make my objects support themselves, I came up with the idea of a gravity defying piece. If the observer sees the structure I wanted them to question how is it being supported. I wanted the piece to be comprised of many different materials and geometric shapes to emphasis the structure and allow...
