3D Mixed Media Sculpture & Preparatory Work
At the start of the 3D mixed media sculpture I struggled
with the entail concept when a bag of miscellaneous objects where placed in front
of me to sketch. I began exploring a few of the object such as a computer hard
drive, a wooden shoe, a trumpet and various piece of metal.
As I was struggling to conceptualise my design I turned to card
and start to experiment with shape. In my under graduate model making was
required with every design, thus card and cardboard are very familiar materials
to me. I began by exploring various shapes and how they might interact with
each other.
As I was trying to make my objects support themselves, I
came up with the idea of a gravity defying piece. If the observer sees the structure
I wanted them to question how is it being supported. I wanted the piece to be
comprised of many different materials and geometric shapes to emphasis the structure and allow the
viewer to look through certain areas and lead their eye to others. These
materials include: white and yellow card, cardboard, chicken wire, and gold
wire.
The piece needed to be supported by a base board. Thus I decided
to utilise the three main materials white card, cardboard, and chicken wire. As
one can see through the based board I added yellow card at the bottom to inject
colour but not over power the geometric construction of the shapes. I have completed a similar exercise with my first years. They received a brief to design a building for our future city. They had a variety of materials to construct their 3D and were tasked with completing a plan and elevation of their design. The pupils had to problem solve and edit their designs as they worked on the actual piece. This is part of a 3D design as the materials my not act the way you envision and your design is therefore altered. It is a great exercise to do with pupils, as pupils who are weaker at drawing have a chance to prosper in constructing a 3 Dimensional piece.
