Content
Learning Outcomes:
1.2 respond to an artwork using critical and visual language.
1.5 interpret the world and communicate ideas through visual means.
1.7 examine the method of a number of artists and the artwork they created.
Learning Intensions:
Pupils will be introduced to 12 different types of painting, via a 5 minute video. Pupils will be introduced to the work of Picasso and Claesz. Using visual thinking strategies the pupils will analyse and discuss the two paintings.
Success Criteria:
 Pupil will watch a 5 minute video and identify as many painting techniques as they can. After we will share all the techniques to identify 12. Pupils will have a chance to experiment with these 12 techniques. In the second class pupils will discuss the two painting, and analyse the imagery.
Resources/Health & Safety:
PowerPoint, paint, paint brushes, paper, smocks will be available to all pupils who are painting and wish to cover their uniforms. All pupils will be instructed to roll up their sleeves when working with paint.
Literacy & Numeracy:
Pupils will be introduced to 12 different painting techniques, these are as follows: drybrush, wash, stippling, pouring, splattering, sponging, impasto, sgroffitio, underpainting, glazing, and scumbling. The pupils will have a chance to experiment with these techniques in class time.
Differentiation:
 After watching the video, I will project up all 12 of the painting techniques and discuss each one with the pupils. There will also be a handout available to any pupil who needs one.
Method:
Introduction:
To begin I will ask pupils to share their knowledge of the different painting techniques. After the group will watch a short 5 min video, whilst doing so they will list as many painting techniques as they can. After as a whole class group we will go through the list, and each pupil will have a chance to experiment using these techniques. In the second class pupils will discuss and analyse the two still life paintings.
Development:
 In the first class pupils will be using discovery learning, identifying 12 types of painting techniques and experiment using these. In the second class pupils will be engaging with visual thinking strategies, thus engaging the class in critical thinking. As a whole class group pupils will discuss the two paintings, Picasso’s peace and freedom and Claesz’ still life with skull and writing quill. Pupils will receive no information about the two pieces and will just engage in discussion around what they see in the two images.
Summery/Revision/Conclusion:
At 12.10 all pupils will pack up their paint and wipe down their desks, placing the tables back into sets of 4 and 5 ready for lunch. In the second half of the class tidy up will begin at 1.20, ensuring all materials are stored away for the next class.
