Second Years 03.09.18

03/09/18
The number of the class is about 18 pupils.
The introduction for the second years was a bit different for from the first years, they got a more detailed breakdown of the Junior Cert. The teacher took out some examples of past junior cert projects to show the class in order to show them what they would be working towards.
Both samples showed two different levels of work from students. Perhaps this was done to reach out across the board as everyone will have different abilities.
The first theme was ‘what a day’ (horses). The pupil had a clear ability to draw. The pupils painting (use of mixed media) was beautiful the texture and light the student captured (close up of horse head) was amazing. The pupils prep sheets where clear and thought out. You could see the pupil had an interest in art and design and in the topic they chose.
The second project, showed a different set of skills and thinking behind it. The pupil chose ‘The next chapter’. The pupil chose graphic poster of a book club and a book 3D. Trademarked logo used in poster needed referencing.
The choice the pupils made were unique in the sense that it was their own ideas, however seeing the interpretation of the headings was interesting. One pupil took a quite literal approach i.e. ‘The next chapter’ the pupil chose a book theme, and the other chose ‘what a day’ a created a story of their own.
I don’t think either are right or wrong it was just interesting to see how each pupil thinks.

3D Mixed Media Sculpture & Preparatory Work 28.02.19

28/02/19 Workshop 6 3D Mixed Media Sculpture  & Preparatory Work At the start of the 3D mixed media sculpture I struggled with the entail concept when a bag of miscellaneous objects where placed in front of me to sketch. I began exploring a few of the object such as a computer hard drive, a wooden shoe, a trumpet and various piece of metal.   As I was struggling to conceptualise my design I turned to card and start to experiment with shape. In my under graduate model making was required with every design, thus card and cardboard are very familiar materials to me. I began by exploring various shapes and how they might interact with each other.  As I was trying to make my objects support themselves, I came up with the idea of a gravity defying piece. If the observer sees the structure I wanted them to question how is it being supported. I wanted the piece to be comprised of many different materials and geometric shapes to emphasis the structure and allow...
